I'm going to be that grandma from Sixteen Candles, W/O the cigarette!
Here are my
Top Ten Reasons for Detesting Dealing with Dinner...
- The daily question, "What's for dinner?" with answer followed by a groan.
- The prep work - chopping, shredding, slicing, peeling, etc
- The recipe times for prep work are usually underestimated
- The splatter! I have an apron, but when I forget it, I inevitably stain one of my favorite shirts.
- The smell - great during, but it sticks with you for hours after and isn't as appetizing...
- Time to make = 30-40 min, Time to eat = 5-10 min, Time to clean up = 30-40 min
- At least one person has a complaint or suggestion on how to do it better
- The other annoying question, "Why can't we eat out?"
- No help, unless threatened
at gun pointto take away video game time - Sometimes it's just not worth it.
Does anyone relate? It can be tough, but we still have to do it. So, being a problem-solver, here are some
Ways to Take the Agony out of Dinner:
- Turn on some tunes or put on a show
- Pre-cooked and pre-chopped ingredients
- Easier substitutions
- Add-ins for personalization and picky palettes
- It's healthier with fresh fruits and veggies we don't usually get eating out.
- As the kids get older, they actually do appreciate more, try more foods, and help more.
- Mostly, it reminds me of my mom and all the wonderful things she did for my sis and me growing up. She's the best!
I hate making dinner, too. I lack any true culinary skills, so there's usually a can or box or two involved in anything I make.
ReplyDeleteboxes are such "helper"s! ditto
DeleteI hate making dinner too! And breakfast and lunch, LOL. That's why I love for-real easy recipes.
ReplyDeleteyes! easy recipes! like on the box make it a meal... i feel guilty sometimes tho... so thats magic in the kitchen night & looks like a storm hit!
DeleteIn that case I suggest you take some time every so often and make big batches of something you can freeze so that later down the road you can just take a portion from the freezer as you need it. Obviously you will have to build up a lot of stuff for a family, especially like Liz with 4 hungry boys to freeze. But it does keep all the chopping, cutting, slicing etc. to one time instead of every meal.
ReplyDeleteexcellent tip! and i should do individual servings with my 3 picky, hectic sched boys! thanks! i will give it a try!
DeleteHi, my name is Christine, and I hate making dinner too. I make sure my kid has a good breakfast and a well-balanced lunch at school. But when it comes to dinner, I flunk out. I'm a tremendously picky eater, so there's only a very few things I eat. My husband will eat anything. Before we had a child, we'd eat two different meals. But to make something for me, him, and our son? *falls over* It's rare we all eat the same thing. It helps when I plan dinners for the week, but I don't often do that.
ReplyDeletemy hub is the worst picky eater & sets terrible example if he doesnt feel like eating wat i made he makes pbj et al... best part, he eats all leftovers for midnight snack...
DeleteI actually love cooking, but I hate having to prep and make a meal after a work day! We started pre-prepping full meals that we could vacuum-bag and freeze and now we'll just thaw out a couple during the week and throw them in the pressure cooker. One day of prep can make a dozen or so meals without breaking much of a sweat. If it weren't for that, I'd have frozen pizza every night of the week!
ReplyDeletei agree, i like cooking, i just struggle with the mental and time drains! and my boys would eat pizza ev night too! but planning ahead def helps!
