Living Memories #flowers

Twenty-six years ago, my husband and I bought our first house. We moved in in March and by April, I was ready to get planting. I was shopping with my grandma and went to buy some flower bulbs. She was shocked. You don't buy perennials, my grandmother contended. You get starts  from family and friends.

That first summer, I got a yucca plant from my mom that she had brought home from the beach.

Irises from my grandma's farm.

Peonies from my husband's grandma's yard.

An old fashioned rose bush from my parent's yard that my dad swore was a weed.

Along with the Tiger Lilies he had me dig up...thinking I'd toss them in the compost pile.

Almost every flower in my yard tells a story and every spring they poke through the ground and share some memories.

  2. How lovely to have such fond memories in your garden. I am jealous, I could never grow peonies and they are a favourite of mine.

    1. So far, they're thriving. I don't do anything special. Just cut them back in the spring for the new growth.

  3. Too sweet! I have a couple plants that have a story. I have a azalea bush my neighbor tossed to the road. I name my plants from the people they came from. Like that bush is called my “Sherry Bush” haha.

    1. I forgot about the neighbors! I got a rose from my neighbor. She always had the most beautiful roses. She passed away and when the lady who bought her house was selling, she told me to take whatever was in the yard. Millie's prize roses were down to a very few, so I dug one up and brought it home. I suppose it can be Millie's rose. So far it's not bloomed, but does get foliage. Roses are such a persnickety flower.

  4. What a nice way to collect memories! While we lived in Europe, people in our little town were always bringing me roots, snippings and plants. The yard became so full, I wasn't sure where to put them all over the years, but I didn't want to turn them down since they were so friendly and happy about giving me the plants, either. And they were pretty :)

    1. That's so neat. I always thought it was a WV thing...my grandmother actually considered transplants, roots, and snippings good luck. Like transplanting the love and generosity of your friends to your home.

I have a small yard. I just keep expanding my flower beds. One day, I may not have anything to mow.

wanted to thank you for the post and tell you how i totally relate: i found a seedling tree from our old house and potted it and it survived the winter and will soon be a beautiful red maple - nice to have a big reminder of our "roots" ha ha

    1. That is awesome!!! I love that. Now that my mom and my parents have passed, having plants from "home" still growing makes me feel connected, as you say, to my roots.
