#WeightLoss, take 2019

loved having all the boys home!

I'm at it again. And this is definitely NOT a New Year's Resolution. I don't want to make a cliche resolution to eat better, exercise more, and lose weight. I really want to make a life change. And if I keep trying, it's bound to stick one of these times, right?

I know I can do it. Over the summer, I stayed with my plan for a couple of months and lost 10 lbs. Then life exploded and my healthy eating diary got packed up with the rest of the house, soon followed by the holidays and family. Forget trying to get back to eating healthy with all that activity and stress. And that's why most people decide to wait and make changes when the holidays are over. The New Year is a good time to reset life.

So, here's the Plan that Works! for me:
  • Write down all Calories
  • Start with a Max of 1500 cal/day, then cut back more
  • Fruit and Veggies are "Free" - I don't count those calories to encourage myself to eat more of them
  • Drink more Water - I start with 16-20 oz/day and add more
  • Creative Exercising - burn calories any way I can!
    • Stand more at work
    • Take stairs instead of elevators
    • Park farther away at the store - especially if I need to shop at several stores: I park in the middle of the lot and walk around
    • Master the stairs at home - I do 10 flights up and down when I can.
    • Keep the house cleaner, or vacuum more... much as I hate to clean!
I'll post updates soon. And I wish you all luck with your resolutions or aspirations to improve!

Let's make 2019 a prosperous, positive year!

Shaking Off the January Blahs

Happy January! Or should I say, Ugh, it's January again...

December is such a sparkly, festive, pepperminty month. But when January 1st rolls around, you better get those decorations down or feel the wrathful stares of your concerned neighbors.

This year, I happened to get those lights down lickety-split! And now that Christmas is put away and the company is gone and the vacation is definitely over, the house seems so dreary and bare. So mundane and unscented. And since the weather outside is still frightful, we have to spend more time inside wallowing in all the boring drabness of it!

So here are some suggestions to Shake Off the January Blahs:
  • Game and/or Movie Night - Just because the holidays are over, doesn't mean the fun has to be! A family night of games or a movie will liven and lift everyone's spirits. And doing this on a regular basis will bring your family closer, keeping your house warm with smiles all year.
  • Slumber Party by the Fireplace - A spontaneous night cuddled up by the fire or any out of the ordinary surprise - baking cookies, going through old photos, making funny videos instead of just watching them! - can spunk up any dull January weekend.
  • Change out the photos - January is for new beginnings, so put fresh faces in your picture frames. Time for an update!
  • Rearrange the furniture - Another way to give the old homestead new life is by changing the foot pattern, switch the seats, shed new light. And sometimes you'll find some lost items in the process...
  • Have a Mom Party - Christmas was mostly for the kids. Now how about some pampering for the head of the house who did most of the decorating, shopping, cooking, cleaning, etc (two or three times as much in November and December as the rest of the year!) And if you're like me, you probably had to return a few things anyway, so now you can get something you really want!
  • Sales - I love finding a good deal. And this is one of the best times of the year to do it. Sales, sales, sales! On Christmas stuff for next year and closeout winter clothes.
  • Treat Yourself - I know. January is also the time we try to avoid treats because of all the December parties and candy and scrumptious snacks. But the treat doesn't have to be edible. This section is more about "Me" time. Give yourself some alone time with a book, a couple of episodes of Netflix, a hobby you've neglected, or just a snuggle with someone you love - like the cat! Maybe even 30 minutes of exercise. Do something for you to recharge your batteries and January won't look or feel so bad!
Hope your 2018 is off to a tremendous start!

Happy Wishes for 2017 from THE Housewives

2016 is finally over. There were ups and downs as in every year, but the last couple of months seemed to roll down a hill and never hit the bottom for us to climb back up!

Thankfully, a new year has connotations of a new beginning. And we at the House would like to share some joy and fond wishes with you all... Plus some fun memes you can take with you!

Perfect Leftovers Pie!

Once again, thanks so much to the ladies at the Really Real Housewives of America for having me post on their blog today. I would like to wish them, and all of you, the very best for a Happy New Year. I personally am hoping for better things in 2017. This last year was not a great one.

Here’s hoping you all had a wonderful Christmas and that Santa was good to you. If you don’t actually celebrate Christmas, I hope your holidays were great too.  I am not sorry it’s all over but we seem to forget from year to year all the effort and worry we put into the season. I know some of the “Housewives” don’t bother too much with Christmas dinner and serve pizza and at least one friend served salmon for their main dish of the day. I am an old traditionalist though and I have to have my turkey. (Nope not my turkey in the picture, I forgot to take a pic).

However, discussing the whole issue with our guests we discovered that our favourite Chinese restaurant is open on Christmas Day. They do serve turkey at Christmas time so maybe we will plan to go there next year. I know I was exhausted by the end of the day even thought a lot of cooking had been done in the days before. I even cheated and bought a Christmas pudding imported from England’s Marks and Spencers. Previously we have always had home made. I was fascinated to discover the ingredients included vegetable suet which I have never tried, don’t even know if we can get it here. It is a much healthier option than beef suet.

I don’t know how many of you still have leftovers by now (I have a stack of turkey), but I was watching The Great British Bakeoff last week and thought this pie was fabulous. Mind you, Paul Hollywood went to a lot of trouble decorating the pastry even if he called it a rough puff pastry. I am afraid I would cheat and use bought puff pastry. If you don’t have a pie funnel to let out the steam, we used to use an upside down egg cup to hold up the pastry and cut a few small splits in the pastry itself. I also may well make this without the pastry.

Leftover Turkey & Ham Pie

Pastry
400 g plain flour, plus extra for dusting
pinch of salt
65 g chilled butter
160 g frozen butter
150-180 ml  cold water

For the filling
45 g butter
2 large leeks, washed & roughly sliced
finely grated zest and juice of 1 orange
50 ml medium sherry
3 Tbs plain flour
500 ml chicken stock (or 250ml left over gravy & 250ml stock)
1 heaped tsp wholegrain mustard
200 ml single cream
650 g left over turkey meat, cut into bite size pieces
250 g left over ham, cut into bite size pieces
2 Tbs tarragon, roughly chopped
salt and white pepper
1 beaten egg to glaze

1. For the pastry, mix the flour and salt together. Rub in the 65g chilled butter. Gradually add enough water to form a dough.

2. Lightly dust the work surface with flour and roll the dough into a rectangle.

3. Grate 60g of frozen butter over the bottom two thirds of the dough. Fold down the top third and fold up the top third as if folding a letter.

4. Turn 90 degrees and roll out again. Repeat adding the remaining frozen butter and fold as before. Rest in the fridge for 30 minutes before using.

5. For the filling, melt the butter in a large frying pan over a medium heat and add the leeks to the pan with the orange juice, zest and sherry. Cover and cook gently for 6 minutes, stirring occasionally until the leeks are just tender. Remove the lid and increase the heat, reduce the liquid until you are left with a few spoons of the buttery liquid. Sprinkle the flour over the leeks and stir to mix evenly. Gradually add the stock, simmer for 5 minutes until the sauce has thickened slightly. Add the mustard, turkey and ham and stir. Finally add the tarragon and cream. Season to taste with a little white pepper and salt.

6. Place a pie funnel in the center of a 1.2 /1.5 liter (1 1/2 quart) pie dish. Pour the pie filling and sauce into the dish and allow to cool.

7. Preheat the oven to 375F. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to about 5mm thick. Cut a 2cm strip of pastry. Brush the rim of the pie dish with egg wash, then place the pastry strip onto the rim, brush this with egg wash. Cut the remaining pastry a little larger than the dish. Position the lid over the filling; make a steam hole to expose the funnel. Press the edges to seal then trim away any excess. Re-roll any trimmings and make decorations. Brush the pastry with egg wash, arrange any decorations on top of the pie and brush these with egg too.

8. Bake for 35-40 minutes until the pastry is risen and golden, allow to cool slightly before serving. 6 Servings.

Good Habits - 21 Days to make or break, the #Truth

Some people like to start the new year with a new attitude - to be healthier or have a better outlook on life... But no matter when you choose to make a significant change, it's a tough thing to do!

We've heard this statement before that it takes 21 days to make a habit. So if you do a good thing (like exercise or drink water with your dinner) for 21 days in a row, it will become a habit. Easy, right? Well, it will become part of your routine. And if you feel better because of it, hopefully you'll stick with it and it will become part of your lifestyle.

The problem is, it doesn't work so well for breaking a habit. Trying NOT to do something for 21 days is not the same thing. It's much harder. It takes much more will power. AND even after staying away from a bad habit for years, one slip can cause it to return, very similar to an addiction.

So here I offer some helpful ways to break a bad habit:

  • Pick one bad habit and concentrate on it.
  • Be specific, have a plan, and write it down.
  • Replace the bad behavior with a good one, especially when a craving to be bad strikes.
  • Check in with yourself - have checkpoints or goal measurements, or even a chart just to check off that you did good today.
  • Reward yourself with something special (NOT a cheat day to do your bad habit just this once - it defeats the purpose!)
  • Don't be too hard on yourself if you do slip up - it happens, just keep trying!

Now I need to pick one for myself to work on... so many to choose from!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Good Habits - Keeping track of the Yearlies

A new year means new beginnings for some. It also means we have to repeat the yearlies...

There's the yearly bills - Home Owner's dues, property taxes, income taxes, dog tags, license plates...

There's the yearly events and holidays - birthdays, anniversaries, sports seasons, fundraisers (yay Girl Scout Cookies! and my book events!)

There's the yearly maintenances - oil changes, carpet cleaning, spring cleaning, gardening/landscaping/pruning, etc

and
There's the yearly doctor visits - prodding, poking, squishing, rinsing-and-spitting, blinding, etc

I look forward to some of these yearlies (I like to purge and donate) and dread others (Didn't I just go to the doctor?). Each year my memory gets worse, so I keep track of my yearly events on my calendar. Bdays are easy and help me remember to get my boys' physicals for their sports. The doctors usually keep me in line with their reminders, but not always so looking back at my calendar helps (I think I'm due for a dental cleaning, ugh). I also have a budget so I know what's coming, but I have a bad habit of ignoring the big "surprises" until I get the invoice in the mail, not to mention, they always go up!

What yearlies do you like/dislike? How do you keep track?
Happy Muster-it-up for Monday!

Speaking of Parties...

Cookies and Christmas just go together! There's peppermint cookies, sugar cookies, gingerbread men, spraetzles? jammies, and those peanut butter cookies with the Hershey kisses on top. Just so many wonderful yummies! With so many cookies, some people have Christmas cookie parties - decorating parties, baking parties, exchanges, recipe swaps, etc. My neighbors do a cookies & beer exchange party. Bring 3 dozen cookies, take 3 dozen cookies or so. And they give out prizes. Last year I won! I found a place that makes edible pictures and I put characters from my books on cookies!

I also love going to a My Favorite Things party where we each bring 5 of our favorite things and go away with 5 new things. I'm bringing book lights and foot cream - for a soothing night ritual.

And neighborhood New Year's Eve parties are the best. Usually we get to bring the kids who run around in the basement while the adults socialize upstairs with the food. Ahh. Ring in the new year right, then walk home! We used to have it at our house when the boys were younger, now we let others have the joy of hosting.

How do you celebrate? What little favorite things would you share? And what goodies do you like to bring to parties?
